« » « Previous Next »Today at the XOXO festival, I was approached on two occasions by dudes who knew me from zines I published a decade ago.
One guy introduced himself as someone who had written for Uber. He asked if I knew what happened to Adam and Dakota. I told him that we were all still best buds.
The other guy was like “Were you the Ben Brown that did Flabjab? Because if so, we used to live together!” I didn’t remember him at first, but after chatting for a few minutes, realized that he was right - we lived together 14 years ago, when we were both in college.
I also got to meet Claire Loobylu Robertson, who contributed a comic to the first issue of my print zine way back in 2001! It was the first time we’d ever met face to face, and it happened totally by chance when she sat next to me at the conference.
And I speaking of comics, I met Richard Stevens from Diesel Sweeties, and had a fun talk about pixel art, and making and shipping physical things.
I miss running zines. I feel like the work I did on zines is some of the most lasting, most impactful stuff I’ve ever done. I’m really getting a kick out of handing out my pixel art stickers to folks here in Portland. It’s not the same as making a whole zine, but I get great joy out of seeing my work in other people’s hands!
