2. “ The escalating white fear of newly empowered ethnic groups and blacks is a naked replay of more than a century ago, when large waves of immigration and the northern migration of emancipated blacks, coupled with a tumultuous modernization of the American work force, unleashed a similar storm of racial and nativist panic.

   Fran Rich’s latest column puts the stupid “beer summit” into the context of the racism that is spilling out all over the place now.  What amazes me the most about seeing these senators and newsmen bloviate is not that what they say might in some circles be construed as racist, but that it’s just plain old fashioned racism and xenophobia, out there for everyone to see.   I suspect that behind their boldness is the bone-chilling realization that they are losing control.

   Good riddance!
